The Viborg-Hurley School District will be opening facility use to student-athletes in grades 7th – 12th (2020-21) following school issued safety guidelines as well as closely following SDHSAA Summer Contact Guidelines and CDC Safety Guidelines on June 1st. Facility use will be narrowed to weight rooms, gymnasiums, football fields, and only one set of restrooms per building. Students will need to bring their own water bottles and follow all posted guidelines while using the facilities. Parents/Guardians will need to complete and return the summer use waiver form in order for the student-athlete to have facility access. These waivers can be found on the school website or at the front doors of each building (inside the drop boxes). Coaches will be coordinating with athletes regarding use time of the facilities to allow for proper supervision. Viborg-Hurley Class of 2020 Recognition Caravan The Viborg-Hurley graduating class will be led by our local fire departments through the streets of Viborg and Hurley on Saturday, May 16th to recognize the class for all of their accomplishments at Viborg-Hurley. - 5 pm – Caravan of Seniors travels through the streets of Viborg - 6:15 pm – Caravan of Seniors travels through the streets of Hurley The caravan will be attempting to travel all streets in both towns that contain an outlet. The junior class is holding a fundraiser and selling Thirty-One Large Utility Totes and Zip Top Utility Totes. The cost of these totes is $40 each (This includes tax and shipping costs). National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of finding breast cancer early. In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month our Lady Cougars have designated our VB game against the Lennox Orioles on Thursday, October 17 in Hurley as our "Dig Pink" night. Let's make a difference and spread the word about mammograms while also supporting our Lady Cougars by filling our stands with your favorite shades of pink.

The Baltic School District will be hosting a Military Appreciation Night at the volleyball game on Thursday, October 10th. The dress up theme for fans will be "camo" attire. They would like to recognize the men and women who serve or have served in the military. In appreciation for their sacrifices, they will be recognizing the military members that are in the stands that evening as well as providing a small treat to those in attendance. In addition, members of the military will have free admittance to the game.. Come out to the volleyball matches and help show your gratitude and support for our military members while you cheer for the Cougars. .

Reminder any medications you sent to school for your child, need to be picked up by a parent/guardian. Any medication not picked up by May 31st will be disposed of. Also low lunch balance notices are being mailed today. These need to be cleared up by the the last day of school. High school and middle school students will not be able to be checked out for the summer until any negative lunch balance is taken care of and elementary students will not be able to participate in "Cougar Day" on the last day of school. The soccer goals finally arrived, the elementary and high school student councils along with Mr. Knutson were able to get them put together last Friday. And boy the kids are excited. Viborg-Hurley received 100 Adult All Session Tickets and 100 Student Tournament tickets to sell for the State B Tournament. Adult Tickets are $41.00 and Student Tickets are $22.00. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, March 7th from 6:00-8:00 PM at both schools. Each school will have 50 of each type of ticket available for purchase. We are limiting the number of tickets that can be purchased by each individual to 6 so that all those in line have an opportunity to purchase tickets.

With the onset of extremely cold temperatures this week, we are asking parents to make sure that their children are dressed in appropriate winter gear (coat, gloves, snowpants, hats, scarves, snowboots) before venturing outside. Even a short time exposed to these temperatures can lead to frostbite. We also encourage parents to make sure that students driving in their own vehicles to school have these items as well as a winter survival kit with them. You never know when a car might stall or slip into the ditch. Vehicles cool off quickly in these temps including school buses.
Before we know it Parent Teacher Conferences will be here. Conferences will be held on February 7th. Notes are going home with elementary students in bags today with your time so please check and make sure the time works. (It is the same time you had for fall conferences). If this time doesn't work for you or you need to set up a time with your child's teacher, please call/email me and I can see what is open and get you scheduled in. Conference times are 10 minutes in length. Reminder that all conferences are held in the Viborg building, with the Middle & High School staff set up in the gym. Conferences run from 2:00-8:00 PM.

The Viborg-Hurley Schools will be opening at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 3. There will be no morning pre-school. Buses will run from both locations at approximately 9:45.
There will be a bake sale with lots of yummy Christmas goodies before (6:30) and after the Elementary Christmas Concert on Monday night December 3rd. (The Elementary Concert starts at 7:00 PM.) Proceeds of the Bake Sale will go to the junior class.

The Viborg-Hurley Schools will dismiss at 2:00 this afternoon due to icy roads. There will be no after school sports practices.
The wrestling team will be running a "Cougar Scrimmage" in the little gym in Hurley on Friday, November 30th at 6:00 PM. The public are welcome and encouraged to come and watch our wrestlers and cheer them on.
Winter Sports pictures have been moved to December 10th from 1:00-4:00 PM.
There will be a wrestling meeting on November 6th at 6:00 PM in Mr. Groenke's room at the high school. A parent is asked to attend with their 6th -12th grade wrestler if they plan on participating.
Looks like we will be getting a good taste of those colder temps this week. Please be sure your students have a hat, gloves and a coat when they leave for school in the mornings. All students need to be prepared whether it be for recess, on the bus, or driving to school.

We have asked a speaker from USF to come in and talk to parents about how to fill out the FAFSA. This meeting will be held tomorrow night (October 25th) at 6:00 PM in the math room.
The girls basketball team will be providing daycare services during parent teacher conferences October 25th from 2:00-8:00 PM in the FACs room. (Free Will Offering)

Parents of Elementary Students.. Parent Teacher Conference Appointment Times are going home today in your child's backpack. Please be looking for a bright pink 1/2 sheet of paper with your scheduled time for Thursday the 25th. If you need a different time scheduled, please call or email me and we will take a look at the schedule.
If you have a key fob for the Viborg or Hurley School, you will need to sign a "Weight Room Release Form" to keep your fob activated. This goes for ALL fob owners whether you use the weight room or not. The form can be found on the website under the "Documents" section & then "Parent Resources". Any fob owners that have not turned in the release form by October 31st will be deactivated on November 1st.
Picture Retake Day is coming up on October 29th at both schools. If your student was not here on picture day they can stop in at either of the school offices and pick up a picture packet. For those that would like retakes done, please send the entire picture packet you received back in with your student on the 29th and they will retake them at no charge. Please make sure you bring in the original pictures. Any questions, please call the school.
Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up Thursday, October 25th from 2:00-8:00 at the Viborg School. Sign up sheets are going home with elementary students today so please check their bags, fill them out and get them back to the school no later than October 18th so I can get times scheduled. Conferences are 10 minutes in length.
There will be a C VB game tonight at Lennox. This game will begin at 5:00 PM with JV and V to follow.
The VHHS Student Council will be holding a Hat and Glove Drive from now until the end of the first week in November (November 9th). A donation bin will be in the front office at both schools for new and gently used hats and gloves. Thank you in advance for supporting our service project to keep our community warm.
The JH & JV Football games scheduled against Garretson for this evening have been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
Good luck to our MS Softball team as they advance in State Tournament Play. They will play their second game on Sunday, October 7th at 10:00 AM at Dunham Park in Sioux Falls against Mitchell. If they win they will play again at 11:20 AM that day against the winner of the Luverne vs. Yankton game. Last Sunday they lost against Memorial Middle School but came back to win the game against Lennox to keep them in the tourney. Good Luck Girls!!!
With a predicted 85 degree day on Wednesday, we will allow shorts on Wednesday for students at all levels (Pre-K thru 12). However, the temperature is predicted to drop back down on Thursday so no shorts on Thursday.

For those of you interested in staying toasty warm during the football game on Friday against Garretson plus having some of the best seats in the house, the After Prom group has deal for you. They are selling tickets for chances to sit up in the open room in the new crows nest during the football game against Garretson this Friday night (October 5th) for you and 3 of your closest friends. If your ticket is chosen you and your friends will also be served your choice of a pop and a bag of popcorn during the game. Tickets are 1 for $2.00 or 6 for $10.00. Our Float Winners from today's parades were as follows: Hurley Parade Winners Commercial Division: 1st place went to Merchants State Bank and 2nd place went to Parson's Insurance. In the School Division 1st place went to the 8th graders, 2nd place went to the 7th graders and 3rd place went to the 5th graders. Viborg Parade Winners Commercial Division 1st place winner was Parson's Insurance and 2nd place winner was the Turner County Pink Ladies. In the School Float Division 1st place went to the 9th grade, 2nd place went to the 10th grade, and 3rd place went to the 11th grade. A big "Thank you" to members of color guards, our announcers and the fire departments, ambulance crews, Viborg police, and Turner County Sheriff personnel as well as all of the business that had parade entries. We also want to thank the band from Centerville and our own Viborg-Hurley Band for making the parades special.
Congratulations to our Cougars on their win tonight! We are so proud of you. Tonight's win was a highlight of our homecoming week.

Our VHHS Cheerleaders are selling Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirts. T-shirts will be charcoal gray and are available in both short and long sleeve versions. Orders are due Monday, September 24th. PIRATE DAY - SEPTEMBER 19 In the spirit of homecoming and "Talk Like a Pirate Day" we are encouraging our elementary students to dress up in their best pirate gear on the 19th. Whalebone Wanda will be awarding some special treats that day so watch for her in the hallways and greet her with your favorite pirate saying.
There will be no school for students or staff on Thursday, September 6th. We will have a full day of school on Friday, September 7th.
Visitation Services for Brady Patterson and Kelley Fox will be held at the Viborg Community Center on Wednesday, September 5th from 5:00-7:00 with prayer services to follow. Funeral services for Brady will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 6th at Faith United Lutheran Church in Volin. Funeral services for Kelley will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 6th at First Baptist Church in Viborg. The Patterson/Fox/Jensen Community Benefit and Silent Auction will take place on Sunday, September 9th at the Viborg-Hurley High School from 11:30 to 1:30. The Wrestling program will be selling Indian Taco's at the Football game this Friday, August 31st beginning at 6:30 PM to raise money for our new wrestling program. We hope that you will come out to the game, cheer our football players to victory and enjoy a delicious Indian taco while you are there. The robotics club will also be at the game that evening selling 50/50 raffle tickets. The winning number will be drawn at halftime of the game.

The Viborg-Hurley Boys Team received 2nd place at the 2018 State Track Meet in Rapid City. We are very proud of all of our state qualifiers.
