Viborg-Hurley Middle School Among the 300 State Finalists in the National Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM Competition

Viborg Hurley Middle School has been named one of 300 State Finalists in the 14th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, receiving a $2.5K prize package.

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is a national competition designed to empower students in grades 6-12 to leverage the power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to create innovative solutions addressing critical issues in their local communities. The competition empowers public middle and high school students to catalyze change by applying Problem-based Learning (PBL) principles, environmental stewardship, and entrepreneurship to address some of society's most pressing challenges.

Mrs. Jena Campbell, our middle school science teacher, submitted the initial grant application on behalf of the school district. “The STEM project will provide a way to address food insecurity in the district through a student-led greenhouse.  This project will provide educational opportunities throughout both communities on the creation of a vegetable garden, as well as providing the use of garden tools.  Both objectives will enable community members to create and sustain their vegetable garden.”, wrote Mrs. Campbell.

The grant application now moves onto the second stage where Mrs. Campbell plans on teaming with the Viborg-Hurley FFA Ag Marketing Team for a chance at an additional $12,000 and advancement in the competition. Congratulations Mrs. Campbell on your successful grant application, your passion for education, and your dedication to the Viborg-Hurley School District.
