The Viborg-Hurley Elementary and Middle School held their school spelling bee on Monday, November 26th at 7:00 in the high school gym. The top three spellers from the elementary and the top three spellers from the middle school will go on to compete in the Southeast South Dakota Regional Bee at USD in Vermillion on Saturday, February 23rd. The winners of the Regional Bee will go on to compete in the SD State Spelling Bee which will be held in Vermillion on Saturday, March 16th at USD. The South Dakota winner will then go on to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington DC in May, 2019.
The competition Monday evening began with the top 5 spellers from each grade (3-8) and continued until we had determined the top three spellers in the elementary and middle school divisions.
Our top three spellers from the elementary were: Ava Marts, Wyatt Slack, and Addison Sayler.
Our top three spellers from the middle school were: Andrew Madsen, Wendi Silverthorn, and Evan Campbell.
All spellers that competed in our school bee received a theater ticket and the top three spellers from each school also received an additional prize and certificate. We would like to give a big thank you to our prize sponsors: The Lund Theater, The Viborg-Hurley PTO, and Pump N Stuff for their generous donations and sponsorship of this event.
We wish our winners the very best as they advance on to the region competition in Vermillion.
